Nuntius SMS Two Factor Authentication

Nuntius adds 2nd Factor Authentication by SMS Text message verification code. A 6 digit code is send to your SMS device (phone). You enter that number in the WordPress login box in order to login.

Wordpress Obviously to install a WordPress plugin you will first need WordPress. We recommend using the latest version available.

PHP Functions

Most commercial servers have PHPs mail function enabled and available. If not, you will need to have a Gmail account and enter those credentials into the Admin Settings page in order to send SMS via email.

WP Upload Installation

To install a WordPress Plugin with the WP Uploader:

  1. Download your WordPress Plugin to your desktop.
  2. Do NOT decompress the zip archive.
  3. Read through the “readme” file thoroughly to ensure you follow the installation instructions.
  4. Go to Plugins screen and click Add New. Click Upload Plugin (same location as Add New button).
  5. Click Choose File and navigate to your desktop where you downloaded the plugin. Select it and upload.
  6. Click Activate Plugin to activate it.

 

FTP Installation

To install a WordPress Plugin manually via FTP:

  1. Download your WordPress Plugin to your desktop.
  2. If downloaded as a zip archive, extract the Plugin folder to your desktop.
  3. Read through the “readme” file thoroughly to ensure you follow the installation instructions.
  4. With your FTP program, upload the Plugin folder to the
    wp-content/plugins folder in your WordPress directory online.
  5. Go to Plugins screen and find the newly uploaded Plugin in the list.
  6. Click Activate Plugin to activate it.

To setup Securus

  1. Login to your WordPress Site as Admin.
  2. Hover over the Settings menu item and select Nuntius

Nuntius Global Settings

Nuntius allows you to add and remove SMS Carriers as you please. No limit to the number of carriers you can add.

  1. Email Address – The Code is sent out via email to SMS carriers. This needs to be a valid email address.
  2. Code Expires – When the code is sent, how long until the code expires? If a user goes to login, a Code is sent to their phone. If they do not complete the login process that code will remain valid until it expires. Once they login that code is reset and no longer useable.
  3. Mailer – You can use PHPs mail function, or you can use Gmail. If you select Gmail, you will need to enter your Gmail account credentials in the two fields below.
  4. Gmail Addresss – Your Gmail address. (only needed if using Gmail to send messages)
  5. Gmail Password – Your Gmail password. (only needed if using Gmail to send messages)
  6. SMS Carriers – Nuntius come reloaded with a broad list of SMS Providers (cellphone companies). Almost all carriers allow you to send an email to a specail email address which then gets turned into an SMS (text) message and sent to the users phone. They typical format of the special email address is [PhoneNumber]@[CarrierDomain].
    • Carrier Name – Displayed on front end. Users see this to select their carrier.
    • Carrier Domain – This field must contain an @ symbol and be a valid domain. eg: @example.com
    • Enable – Putting a checkmark in the enable field will add it to the list displayed to the user.

    To add more carriers, simply follow the preloaded examples.

To setup your profile

  1. Login to your WordPress Site as your User.
  2. Hover over the Users menu item and select Your Profile.

Setup Nuntius so that your account requires a SMS Code to login.

  1. SMS Authentication – Enable or Disable 2 Factor Authentication.
  2. Require Number during Login – You can require Nuntius to ask for the last 4 digits of your phone number before it sends the Code to you. An added layer of security.
  3. SMS Phone Number – The phone number you receive SMS (text) messages. (some carriers may require you to enter your country code.) (Don’t forget your Area Code.)
  4. SMS Carrier – Your Cell phone company. If yours is not listed, add it to the Nuntius Admin Options and make sure it is enabled. If you do not have Admin privileges, you’ll have to ask an Admin to do it for you.
  5. Test – You can test to make sure the SMS is working for your phone. Afterall, you would not want to enable SMS Auth if it does not work for your carrier.

Test your settings

To ensure Nuntius is working for your phone and carrier, you can test it before enabling 2nd Factor Authentication.

  1. Enter your phone number in the Phone Number field.
  2. Select your cell phone carrier.
  3. Press the Test button.

You should receive a SMS (text) Message momentarily. There have been times where it has taken me 3 to 5 minutes to receive my text message. Be patient. If you repeatedly press the Test button, it will send multiple codes to your phone.

Verify the Code is working

To ensure Nuntius is working for your phone and carrier, you can test it before enabling 2nd Factor Authentication.

  1. Enter the code sent to your phone in the newly appearing Verify text field.
  2. Press the Verify button.

If it turns green and says Success you are know for sure that your settings are correct.

To edit a users options

Admin can enable or disable Nuntius for individual users.

  1. Login to your WordPress Site as Admin.
  2. Edit the users info as you usually would.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page.
  4. Enable or Disable Nuntius.

Ajaxed Login Screen

After you enter your username and password and submit the form one of three things happens.

  • If you have Nuntius enabled and you have enabled Phone Number Verification, it will ajax in a SMS Number field where you enter the last 4 digits of your SMS number.
  • If you have Nuntius enabled and you have disabled Phone Number Verification, it will send a text message to your phone and at the same time ajax in a Code field where you enter the 6 digit code from your text message.
  • If Nuntius is disabled you are logged in as normal

Do I have to register or use a 3rd party SMS message service?
No. Nuntius is build to send Codes to SMS numbers via special email addresses provided by carriers.
What if my carrier does not have a special email address for my SMS Number?
No not enable Nuntius for your user account!
